The BPF bench scale and pilot scale pretreatment units allow for the breakdown of different types of biomass, including agricultural, forest or food waste residue into fermentable sugars. Hydrolysis vessels enable enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulosic fractions from pretreatment.




Fermentation

Convert feedstock to your desired product

At the BPF fermentation pilot modules sugars are converted into bio-based intermediates using fermentation processes. We can take all kind of micro-organisms like bacterial, fungal, yeast, GMO and non-GMO, to obtain the desired product.




Downstream Processing

At the downstream processing module products are purified for applications such as biofuels, biochemicals, food ingredients and pharmaceuticals. On downstream processing BPF is really well equipped to take many processes, for example homogenisation, centrifugation, filtration, extraction and drying.

At BPF we have both the industrial scale knowledge and the equipment to help you successfully developing and upscaling your bioprocess. Scale-up research can be very risky and time consuming. BPF helps to reduce costs and time-to-market product development based on

Flexibility

BPF is a downsized plant of a highly complex penicillin production process, implying we can take almost all biotech processes. We have the flexibility to design customer specific processes thanks to the modular setup of our pilot plant. The available modules cover biomass pretreatment, hydrolysis, fermentation and downstream processing.




Confidentiality

BPF recognizes that confidentiality is key for the customer. All BPF staff is bound to a confidential agreement as agreed with the customer. Moreover, the IP rights resulting of the work done at BPF will remain with the users. Open access and each client’s IP confidentiality/protection are a given at BPF.

Scale down approach

The scale down approach is key to success in scaling up biotech processes, baring in mind the increasing complexity and aggressive time to market challenges in today’s biochemical engineering. It’s a challenge to convert labscale into industrial scale knowledge; a newly developed process optimized for maximum productivity on labscale likely runs into scale up limitations. You don’t want to become champions at the lab and losers at the plant.
