AgriMax: Agri & food waste valorisation co-ops based on flexible multi-feedstocks biorefinery processing technologies for new high added value applications. A new European project proposal led by IRIS positively evaluated by the BBI programme.

Approximately one third of all food produced globally is wasted every year throughout the whole value chain-from farmers to consumers. To extract the significant amounts of valuable compounds contained in these wastes, AgriMax will combine affordable and flexible processing technologies for the valorisation of side streams from the horticultural culture and food processing industry to be used in a cooperative approach by local stakeholders creating economic value and reducing environmental impact.

Through the selection of case-scenarios previously developed to a pilot scale to valorize tomato, cereals, olives, potato wastes as food additives, packaging and agricultural materials among others, the project will disclose the holistic potential of 4 new agro-value chains. This will lead in a cascade manner to additional production of active ingredients in lower concentration, but also fibres, biogas and fertilizers from the left biomass. The multi-feedstock biorefinery processes will be validated in 2 demonstration sites in Spain and Italy.

The expert evaluators acknowledged the project idea with an excellent score. In the next months, the consortium will prepare the project grant agreement with the BBI Joint Undertaking and when this phase is concluded, the project will hopefully be launched in September approximately.

About BBI

BBI stands for Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking. It is a €3.7 billion Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the EU and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC). The BBI is dedicated to realising the European bioeconomy potential, turning biological residues and wastes into greener everyday products through innovative technologies and biorefineries.
